Tropical Storm the storm is predicted to become a uncommon highest-level cyclone as it turns towards the Caribbean island, delivering dangerous rapid inundation and landslides.

This weather system, which had wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to hit the coast by early next week, based on data from weather experts.

Advisories of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been released as Melissa brings up to 76cm of rainfall and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," inhabitants have been advised.

This hurricane is the 13th named storm in the ongoing Atlantic season, which usually concludes in late autumn.

Most Intense Cyclone Danger

A Category 5 storm is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

Although the hurricane is expected to reduce in intensity to a Category 4 cyclone before arriving at the island, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the overall impacts" upon reaching the coast, and that the hurricane will be "just as powerful" when it strikes the island.

Critical Preparations

With tropical storm-level gusts and precipitation anticipated well in advance well before it moves across central Jamaica - including potentially the national capital - advisories indicate that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"Several days of harmful winds and torrential rain has started and will cause devastating and dangerous flash flooding and multiple rock slides," advised meteorological officials.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said: "I know that there are countless citizens who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and rightfully so: concern is justified.

"But the most effective method to manage worry and any nervousness and anxiety is to stay ready."

Locals are being instructed to protect their properties with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to stock up on essentials.

Wider Consequences

Advisories are also ongoing for parts of Haiti such as the main city, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and the eastern part of Cuba, where Melissa is anticipated to bring comparable impacts by the midweek period.

Rock slides already being caused by the cyclone have already killed two in the country, according to local authorities.

Projected Trajectory

Melissa is projected to move across the island nation by Wednesday before traveling via the Greater Antilles and out into the open ocean.

By the moment it reaches the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have weakened to a third-level storm.

Environmental Context

While it is difficult to link particular meteorological occurrences to climate change, scientists say it is making weather phenomena increasingly frequent and more extreme.

Increased sea temperatures create additional humidity in the air, aiding in the creation of hurricanes.

Prior to the start of this year's Caribbean cyclone season, weather organizations forecast above-normal activity, citing warmer seas and likely enhanced seasonal rains around African coastal regions - where Atlantic storms frequently develop.
